The two-part OVA of Gravitation (1999) predates the 13-episode broadcast series. It was aimed at fans of Maki Murakami's original shounen-ai ("boy love") manga: the filmmakers assume the viewer already knows aspiring rock singer Shuichi Shindou, novelist Eiri Yuki, and their fractious romance. As the release date of Bad Luck's new album approaches, Shuichi wrestles with writer's block and depression. Yuki has been colder to him than usual--and is writing lyrics for the legendary band Nittle Grasper. The OVA offers more self-conscious slapstick than the series, with lots of asides to the audience, and Shuichi's dreams are more explicit. Voice actors Ozan Uenal (Shuichi) and Dennis Schmidt-Foss (Yuki) don't quite match the performances of their counterparts, Rich McNanna and Rome Elliot, but they have less interesting lines. Fans of these popular yaoi characters will want to add this misadventure to their libraries. (Not rated, suitable for ages 16 and older: tobacco use, comic violence, sexual situations, including homosexuality) --Charles Solomon

4 out of 5 stars Good addition to the series   December 31, 2007
I would recommend watching the full series first because if you aren't familiar with Gravitation this anime may be a little confusing. There is little in the way of character intro or development. I really enjoyed this amine even though it is only an hour long. There are some differences between the OVA, series, and the manga some of which are shown in the EXTRAS. The OVA picked up somewhere either during or after the series left off and gave us more of the relationship between Yuki and Shuichi. Also this anime has BL elements so if this isn't something you like then you also may not want to get this anime or the series.

5 out of 5 stars Best OVA I have ever seen!   July 23, 2007
Whoa what can I say about Gravitation then just I LOVED it! This anime is one of the funniest, most touching, and the most fun I have had watching an anime series and OVA in a LONG time! If you love or like Japanese music at all please do yourself a favor and at least see this OVA and the series somehow. You probably will want to own this series as soon as you finished it or even before. The music is just down right AMAZING and the songs will NOT leave your head and buying the soundtracks is almost if not a must!
Now to the actual OVA don't worry dubbed fans the series cast is all here and do a great job. The only really big diffence is Shuichi looks a little different so that might bother some of the series fans. IMO it's not that big of deal Shuichi is still one of the cutest and likeable anime charcthers I have ever seen. I'm not giving any of the story away but IMO if you loved the series you probably will love the OVA just as much. Gravitation the series and OVA to me is just down right COOL! ^_^

Kinda confusing with all the flashbacks. Still all in all it's not a bad movie.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome anime   January 5, 2006

Gravitation is definately an awesome series, i first saw the first episode on anime selects and loved the series and have since then gotten all of the television series, i felt a little let down at the end of the fourth volume because it really didnt tell you much of what would happen after all was said and done. However, when the OVA came out my sister and i went out to buy it and we loved it. Definate gravitation fanatics:) Getting back to the dvd, the music alone sets the stage for the incredible storylines. Our favorite characters all come back in a more mature setting and even toma seguchi gets to be an awesome character. Overall i give this dvd a 5 star rating for incredible music (we couldnt stop rewinding the music lol:)) and the really cool storylines that keep you wanting to know more of what will happen next for bad luck, and schuichi and yuki's romance.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!   October 1, 2005

The Gravitation OVA is finally here!

I won't bother describing the story, because it basically consists of what has already been explained in other reviews and by Amazon themselves (except for how it ends, but I won't spoil that either, not that it is at all hard to figure out for yourselves), so I'll jump right into the disc itself.

This disc is targetting towards fans of the original manga, and follows the manga timeline with little straying, as opposed to the TV series timeline. Incidentally, the TV series was made after the OVA (and the OVA was made around volume 8 of the manga).

You don't need to have seen the TV series to follow this OVA, but you might find yourself lost if you haven't read any of the manga. While they do show you clips of things that occur in the manga (like Shuichi and Yuki's first meeting, their "first time," and the scene in the club where Shuichi sees that Yuki came after all and stutters uncontrollably), they for the most part assume that if you are watching this, you have already read at least some of the manga. I would personally recommend at least the first two or three volumes before jumping into this (although K and Fujisaki don't appear until volume 5).

For the confused fans of the anime, who have not read the manga, there is a section comparing the anime, manga, and OVA. Also, for the fans of the TV series discs, there are still liner notes, so don't you worry yourselves! And for anyone's interest, after each of the two 30 minute episodes, there is a short "sneek peak" still color images slide show of scenes from the manga with voice overs by the voices of Shuichi and Yuki (you can also access these from the special features menu). If you haven't read the manga, these may just make you want to pick it up!

Ayaka, ASK, Mika Seguchi and Kanna Mizuki (she has a bigger role in the manga and only makes a cameo in the TV series) make no appearances in the OVA, but Shuichi's sister Maiko (from the manga) does.

If you were worried, the English voice cast has pretty much all returned, and even some of the voice actors whose characters aren't even in the OVA (notably, Taki and Mika) returned to do additional voices on this disc.

What may annoy fans of the TV series is the change in eye and hair colors for some of the characters. Eiri still has his brown eyes, but Shuichi now has green (as opposed to his lavender eyes in the TV series) as well as much darker hair.

This disc is not recommended to people who have serious problems with homosexuality, and everyone should be warned that the disc is rated 16+ for one kind of graphic (though there is no sex) scene that Shuichi imagines (you need to be ok with the idea of Yuki in some skimpy undies, too). If you are thinking about picking up this disc for "yaoi" content, you'll probably be disappointed, but for the fans of the series, especially if you are a manga fan, there is a ton to keep you interested. The TV series has quite a bit of the "feeling" of the manga in it, but this OVA is even better in regards to humorous comments and situations and asides to the audience. I was bawling with laughter throughout most of it.

Finally, the music on this disc is amazing. Smashing Blue (closing theme), In the Moonlight, Shining Collection and Spicy Marmalade are all great, and worth listening to all by themselves (and you can do this on the audio only track on the disc!). Also, Blind Game Again (which you may remember from the music video in the TV series) is the opening theme.

All in all, I highly recommend this disc to all current Gravitation fans; especially to the fans of the manga. To those who are not currently fans, you may want to rent (or buy, some of those discs go for as little as 9.99 in some stores now) some of the TV series or check out the manga first, as this disc is a little pricy to take a chance on.
