5 out of 5 stars Even though the tv series was awfully short...   December 29, 2008
It was really good! I like this series a lot. It is about a boy named Setsuna, who is the reincarnation of the angel Alexiel. In his current incarnation, Setsuna has a younger sister named Sara. And he likes her more than brothers usually like their sisters...

My only problem with the anime is that it is so short. The manga runs long...I think there are over 20 volumes. The anime has all of three episodes, and leaves off on a cliffhanger. But the anime is awesome nonetheless.

2 out of 5 stars Disturbing and disappointing   April 8, 2008
Being a fan of japanese animation I was terribly disappointed with this particular creation. Most likely this anime is only meant for the fans of Angel Sanctuary manga. Because otherwise you will have a hard time understanding what is happening and who are the random people you keep trying to add to the equation. To confuse you further male characters might turn out to be female and vice versa.

The animation quality is disappointing. Characters spot huge disproportional chins and constantly dumb facial expressions. The main female character kept reminding me of some kind of alpine shepherdess...

Well, open-mindedness aside the issue of forbidden sister-brother love totally lack subtlety and might scar you permanently with the way it's presented. The fact that the brother in question is in fact a reincarnated female angel is not helping.

Unless you know what you are getting into I would not suggest this anime to anyone. IMO it's not worth neither the time nor the money.

5 out of 5 stars This show is amazing!   January 29, 2008
I was lost in blockbuster one day when I came upon this dvd, and it seemed interesting so I rented it. Immediately I was hooked! I ended up buying it and then was so upset by the cliff-hanger-ending that I went out and bought all the mangas that it originally started with. I'll admit, some of the voice overs are kinda crappy, but I've seen MUCH worse. Kaori Yuki created the series and is insanely talented! It touches on a couple of controversial religious topics, but if you have an open mind you should have no problem. With such a unique storyline, how could you NOT get hooked?!

3 out of 5 stars Kaori Yuki should have stuck to the manga   March 14, 2007

One of the BEST things about Angel Sanctuary the Anime OVA is its content.
One of the WORST things about Angel Santuary the Anime OVA is its content.

Huh?

It is impossible to take a great, super-complcated manga and make it into a good OVA. Luckily Yuki-Sensei figured this out. It could not make it into a series form due to its content "incestual feelings, male with a female soul, rebellion against earth" 'nuff said.

It is odd to say I got into the Manga because of how BAD the OVA was. I didn't get it at all after the first viewing, but I fell in love with the art work. If you ever see the "Angel Cage" book, BUY IT. It rivals only Mikimoto-sensei's work in character design and detail (see Macross, do you remember love, some of Evagelion and currently Ecole du ciel). Anyways, this OVA does not summarize the Manga or provide an alternate adventure.

It just does an introduction of the characters of Setsuna, Kurai, Sara, and others. It doesn't even get into sevorte or any of the major story arcs of the series.

If you do not like the OVA I suggest RUNNING to the nearest Borders / B&N and browsing through the first 3 books. It is a satisfactory OVA, better than some of the other OVA's floating around on Amazon.

3 out of 5 stars someone once said...   March 5, 2007

Angel Sanctuary was one of the most brilliant things they'd ever read. I'm not sure who said that, but I'm sure someone did. And, maybe that's the problem. The manga was so complex and lovely and the anime is only a hour and a half. Don't get me wrong, the anime looks great. But, the characters full flat a lot of the time and a great deal of the plot seems rushed.

This anime is beautiful to look at, but by no means perfect. It's a must for fans of the story, but those that haven't read Angel Sanctuary may want to pick something else up at their local anime store.
