Great Album that Takes Ashlee in a New Direction May 1, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Ashlee Simpson makes fun, listenable, pop-rock albums and that's why she has sold millions of records. People may not like her for whatever reason (I think a lot of it is jealousy), but you can't deny the results. On her new album, she takes a different turn to 80's inspired dance-pop with mostly good results.
Personally, I prefer the more rock oriented tracks like "Little Miss Obsessive" (my fav on the album), "No Time for Tears", and "What I've Become", but the bouncy tracks like "Boys" and "Outta My Head" are also fun. "Murder" has a unique beat that gets better with every listen and "Never Dream Alone" is a solid piano ballad that shows Ashlee can really sing. "Bittersweet World" is another cool tune that has a definite Broadway influence. However, there are some throwaway tracks like "Ragdoll" and "Hot Stuff", which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.
If you liked "L.O.V.E." from her last album, you will like this one. Even if you didn't, I would still give this album a listen as it differentiates itself from most of the bland pop on the radio nowadays. Bravo to Ashlee for taking a new direction in her music and not just copying the (successful) formula of her first two albums.
imo.... April 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It took a whole week of bypassing this album before I decided to just go for it and buy it. Like most people I'm no fan of Ashley herself, but after hearing the first single performed on Ellen I decided to purchase the album. The artwork for the booklet was bland and disappointing which is another reason it took awhile to make my decision seeing as how I'm normally drawn to albums with great artwork. I was a bit shocked that I enjoyed most of the tracks. They're fun, girly, & danceable. The majority of her lyrics are awkward and confusing, and I get the feeling she's enjoying the sound of her own voice.
Great CD April 29, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bittersweet World is a great CD. It's catchy, up-beat and is in pare with Gwen Stefani's first solo album (this surpasses her 2nd) and Fergie's solo. I highly recommend this album to anyone.
Good - Bad - Best April 29, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The first of her CDs I bought after I downloaded the other songs online (pirating) to make sure I wouldn't waste my money. I loved the first CD. I bought the second one entirely on good faith and liked it very little. Thus, as I stood in Target, I stared at the CD debating if I should buy it, and thank goodness I did.
I love this CD. Time and time again, I see people reference Gwen Stefani on here as a comparable artist, and I have to agree. I was saying the same thing prior to friends prior to reading the other reviews.
If you don't like Ashlee, then don't buy the album. It's different from her first two albums, but better. She's experimenting, and I have to say, I like it.
Her best album, and I hope the most popular.
Detailed review - 1 and a half stars April 29, 2008 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
Let me preface this by stating that I like Ashlee Simpson's music. I am not a reviewer that dislikes her just because she is Ashlee Simpson. I like her music because it is fun; I take it at face value and don't give her any more credit other than the fact that she is a neat entertainer that churns out some pretty good pop songs.
In that vein, this album was a huge disappointment. I now understand why this project had been pushed back and so many different release dates were given until its arrival. Let's start from the outside and then in. The cover art, while promising, was a letdown. The inside is nothing to brag about - mediocre photography that has no artistic value coupled with the lyrics made for a very banal and boring booklet. It felt uninspired and rushed. But that is just superficial, right? No. Album artwork is crucial to the overall design and feel of music. It isn't called "art" for nothing.
Still, I had my hopes up that the music would satisfy. Unfortunately, the two best tracks were themselves the singles. "Outta My Head" and "Little Miss Obsessive" have a good vibe, and they are easy to listen to, and, yes, catchy. "Ragdoll" is annoyingly similar to a song on a previous album, entitled "La La." The concept is very much the same, although the melody is different. Three songs on this album are also alike (and not in a good way) - they can be missed. They are "Boys", "Rule Breaker", and "Hot Stuff." The current that runs through them is, essentially, the fact that Ashlee Simpson loves to talk about Ashlee Simpson's other-worldly hotness. One of these types of songs would be nice. Three is overkill and grating to the listener, who quickly gets tired of hearing how Simpson is so hot. Not only is she attractive, she is also hardcore. According to Simpson, she is a "black sleep because [I] like to sleep late." This is just one of many examples of how shallow and puzzling many of the lyrics are. The rest of the tracks are also missable - bits such as "No Time for Tears", "Never Dream Alone", and "Bittersweet World" all sound alike and don't have much to make them interesting or listenable.
All in all, I wish I could go back and time and not pay $15 for this CD. I would much rather have bought the two singles off of iTunes - it would have been cheaper and more satisfying. I recommend readers of this review do the same. I know I am not the only one of her fans that thinks this album was lackluster and trite. One would hope that some of the aspects would make up for another - for instance, the lyrics would make up for the cover art or the melodies would make up for the lyrics. None of this occurs. Major disappointment.
